Which UK birds are legally protected?
In Great Britain, all wild birds, their nests and eggs are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. Lethal control and nest interference are only lawful in limited cases, usually under a licence and as a last resort.
The starting point
You may not take, kill or injure a wild bird, or damage an active nest, unless a specific exception or licence applies. That includes feral pigeons when a nest is in use.
Proofing versus killing
Exclusion and proofing after birds have finished nesting is the usual lawful route. Shooting or trapping is not a default service.
