Ant species found in UK homes
Most UK household jobs are black garden ants. Pharaoh ants and ghost ants in heated buildings need a different approach. Guessing the species from a phone photo is better than guessing the product.
Black garden ant
The common outdoor species that comes in for food. Nests are often under slabs, in lawn edges or in wall cavities. Trails to a sugar source are typical.
Pharaoh and ghost ants
Very small, usually in hospitals, blocks and heated kitchens. They split nests if you spray them. These need a planned baiting programme.
Why it matters
A garden-ant gel used on a pharaoh ant nest can scatter the colony. Identification first, then product choice.
