German, Oriental and American cockroaches: identification
The species changes where you look and which product you use. German cockroaches favour warm kitchens. Oriental cockroaches prefer cooler, damp areas. American cockroaches are larger and less common indoors in the UK.
German cockroach
Small, light brown, with two dark stripes on the pronotum. Found in commercial kitchens, bakeries and heated flats. Egg cases and nymphs hide in equipment voids.
Oriental cockroach
Dark, almost black, slower. Common in basements, drains and boiler rooms. They tolerate cooler temperatures.
American cockroach
The largest of the three. Occasional in heated plant rooms or imported goods. A sighting is still worth a survey.
Why identification matters
Gel baits placed on a cold drain run will fail against an Oriental population living in a gully. A technician confirms the species on site.
