When to call a professional rather than treat it yourself
Not every insect needs a contractor. A single garden ant trail you can wipe away is not an emergency. Wasps in a loft, rats in a drain, or bed bugs in a rented flat usually are.
DIY can be enough
A clean cupboard moth in a sealed packet, or a lone spider, does not need a visit. Remove the food source and watch for a week.
Call sooner
Stinging insects near children, rodents in food rooms, repeating bites after travel, or any pest in a food business.
Safety
Rodenticides, nest treatments and bird work have legal and safety limits. Labels exist for a reason.
